Biography

Ferran Marqués received a degree on Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in 1988. From 1989 to 1990, he joined the Digital Image Sequence Processing and Coding Group at the Signal Processing lab. of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL). In June 1990, he joined the Department of Signal Theory and Communications of the Technical University of Catalunya (UPC). From June 1991 to September 1991, he was with the Signal and Image Processing Institute (SIPI) at the University of Southern California (USC). He received the Ph.D. from the UPC in 1992, and he obtained the Spanish Best Ph.D. Thesis on Electrical Engineering Award-1992.

In 1993 he joined the Technical University of Catalonia where he is currently Professor. He is lecturing on the area of communications, signal processing, digital image processing and image and video compression. His current research interests include image and video analysis, multiview image analysis, image and video segmentation, semantic image and video for indexing, human face detection and recognition, image and video coding, motion estimation and compensation, mathematical morphology and biomedical applications.

He has led UPC participation in the EC-funded RACE-2072 project "Mobile Audio Visual Terminal" (MAVT) from 1994 to 1995 and in the ACTS-AC098 project "Mobile Multimedia Systems" (MoMuSys) from 1995 to 2000. Within MoMuSys, he acted as Work Package Leader of the "Video Algorithms" work package that, among other tasks, implemented the MPEG-4 VM. He has lead UPC participation in the EC-funded IST-1999-20502 project "Unified intelligent access to heterogeneous audiovisual content" (Faethon) from 2001 to 2003. Currently (2003-), he is leading UPC participation in the EC-funded Network of Excellence SIMILAR where he is WP leader of the "Special Interest Group on Multimodality Analysis and Synthesis".

He has served as Associate Dean for International Relations of the Telecommunication School (ETSETB) at UPC (1997-2000). He has been President of the European Association for Signal, Speech and Image Processing (EURASIP) in the term 2002-2004, after having served in various positions of the ERASIP Administration Committee since 1994 (Membership development 1994-1998, Member Services 1998-2000, Secretary and Treasurer 2000-2002). Currently, he is a member of the Direction Board of the European Master of Research on Information Technologies (MERIT), which has been awarded with the Erasmus Mundus distinction (2004-2009).

He served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Electronic Imaging (SPIE) in the area of Image Communications (1996-2000) and as member of the EURASIP Journal of Applied Signal Processing Editorial Board (2001-2003). Since 2003, he is member of the Editorial Board of the EURASIP Book Series on Signal Processing and Communications (Hindawi Publishing Corporation). He has acted as Guest Editor for the journal Signal Processing: Image Communication (Elsevier) (Special Issue on Image Processing for 3-D Imaging) and for the EURASIP Journal of Applied Signal Processing (Special Issue on Signal Processing for 3D Imaging and Virtual Reality).

He has been Co-Chairman of the EUROIMAGE International Conference on Augmented Virtual Enviroments and 3-Dimensional Imaging (ICAV3D-2001, Mykonos, Greece, May 2001), Special Sessions Co-Chairman in the International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP-2003, Barcelona, Spain, September 2003) and Technical Chairman of the 4th International Workshop on Content-Based Multimedia Indexing (CBMI-2005, Riga, Latvia, June 2005). He is author or co-author of more than 100 publications that have appeared as journal papers and proceeding articles, 4 book chapters and 4 international patents.
